PLATTSBURGH -- People often think about exercise and diet as New Year's resolutions. Some also acknowledge the need to emphasize safety: changing batteries in smoke detectors and updating the family's emergency-response plans, for instance. But health officials say taking a minute to check what's hanging out in the medicine cabinet is a good area of focus, as well. Whether it's prescription medication or over-the-counter remedies, outdated drugs should be discarded properly. "Whenever you walk into a major retail store or pharmacy, you'll find an enormous amount of over-the-counter medications in bottles or blister packs of 24 to 36 or more pills," said Laurie Williams, health-education coordinator for the Clinton County Health Department. "You may purchase something for a cold you have now but only use some of the medication.
