No replacement for hard work

This is a consumer advice column written by the Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana . It appears weekly in Business Monday.

Weight loss is a popular topic in January and February as consumers resolve to lose extra pounds. With a third of U.S. adults aged 20 and over considered obese, it's no wonder that the Federal Trade Commission's year-end survey found an estimated 4.8 million people were taken by dozens of weight-loss schemes that involved purchasing bogus pills, powders, patches, creams and other products, all of which added up to make fat-fighting fraud the most common consumer scam in 2007.

Your BBB is warning consumers that the number of complaints to BBBs against weight-loss services has increased by more than 40 percent since 2002. In general, the only place where consumers became lighter was in their wallets!

To emphasize the need for consumers to start their weight-loss research with trustworthy advice, following are examples of companies that BBB has rated as unsatisfactory due to their empty promises and unscrupulous business practices:

Fraudulent clinical trials

The BBB serving Denver and Boulder, Colo., has received complaints from consumers who thought they were paying to take part in medical trial tests for a new weight-loss drug.
